GATHER AND WEAVE

Learn the Art of Weaving for Women’s Circles and Personal Practice

This is more than a craft class. It’s a remembering.

It’s learning a creative ritual for your hands, heart and community.

For thousands of years, women have gathered in circles, weaving baskets while sharing stories, grief, laughter and wisdom.

Gather and Weave invites you into that lineage.

Inside this online weaving workshop with Dr Andy Lawrence, you’ll learn how to create your own coil basket, while reflecting on what you’re holding, what you’re releasing, and what you’re weaving into being.

Andy creates beautiful spaces where weaving becomes a way to connect, reflect, and share with other women. The weaving itself becomes symbolic of our own life journey and what we need to weave into our lives. I enjoy continuing to weave in my home, and carrying these lessons with me.

Andy is a wonderful, patient and clear teacher, I have really loved learning to weave with her and am grateful she shares her passion so generously. Weaving is a slow and meditative practice which I have found easy to fit in around young children. It gets me off my phone and into a creative and peaceful place. The perfect escape from our busy and loud world.

MEET YOUR GUIDE:
DR ANDY LAWRENCE

Andy Lawrence is a writer, doula, women’s circle facilitator, and mother.

With a PhD in medical and veterinary entomology, she began her career as a research scientist driven by a deep passion for the natural world.

The birth of her two daughters transformed her path, inspiring her to support women and families through the profound transition to motherhood.

Artistic expression is woven throughout her work, with a special focus on basket weaving, an ancient craft she integrates into the sacred spaces she holds for women.

Weaving felt like a meditation once I got going. It also just felt so natural to be sitting in circle with other women sharing from their hearts, with the gentle background sounds of rustling raffia. Thank you for sharing your weaving wisdom with us, Andy.

WHO IT'S FOR

I am so grateful to have learned weaving from Andy, the way she teaches is easy to follow for beginners. Her knowledge and skills are evident in the way she passionately shares this wisdom with others. Andy has inspired me to create with my hands again in moments of quiet, allowing me to tap into the joy and satisfaction of creating objects of beauty with my hands.

Note: Rachael Rose won’t be teaching this workshop. She’s proudly hosting it on her platform and championing this beautiful craft far and wide. Andy has already taught over 30 women in Rachael’s circles, including Rachael herself — a self-confessed overthinking perfectionist who doesn’t love being bad at things (especially at first). But Andy persisted and ended up teaching Rachael 100% online, via videos. Now, Rachael is hooked on weaving and passionate about getting this ancient, soothing, reflective practice into the hands of as many space-holders, circle facilitators, doulas, mothers and women as possible.

Weaving has become a constant companion through a tough season. It's like a moving meditation, it helps reduce my screen time and provides a soothing ritual around my children. I love looking at the many baskets I have now made, reflecting on the challenges and strengths I was experiencing as a mother at the time.

Andy explains weaving simply and clearly. She has a knack for making the craft approachable and her kind heart helps even the most slippery fingered weaver believe they can do it. Weaving in women's circle is really special, for me it’s lovely to have time set aside for a creative practice. For many women who are much shyer with sharing or new to circle, it makes it easier or more comfortable to share. I think it’s so natural to weave in circle. It feels intuitive to share and weave together.

MORE ABOUT ANDY LAWRENCE

Andy began weaving herself, in her postpartum years, slowly stitching herself back together while navigating postpartum depression after having two children during the pandemic.

What began as a soothing creative practice has become a ritual she returns to over and over, and a powerful tool she brings into the circles and ceremonies she leads.

Andy has taught 50+ women in her local community and it is her deep pleasure to pass this on to women further afield.

Andy has such a calm and beautiful vibe, her presence is grounding. She teaches weaving in a really clear and down to earth way, making it feel deeply sacred and special but also totally easy to learn.

I had never weaved before and with Andy’s guidance and the patience of a saint, I learned the skill and found it an amazing support in gauging where my nervous system is at any time I weave. Using our hands to craft is such an amazing skill and good for the nervous system and brain.

Where does this workshop take place?

100% online, via a series of pre-recorded videos and written PDFs which are immediately accessible upon purchase. This is a self paced workshop and you can pause and return to the instructions as many times as you need!

Do I need any experience?

Nope. Absolute beginners welcome. Andy will guide you through everything, step-by-step and most women who have learned weaving from her were first-timers. She knows how to explain the concepts in a way you will understand.

Can I bring this into my women’s circles?

Yes! We encourage you to pass on and teach the women you support, whether that’s using weaving in your circles, rites of passage work, or group rituals. Andy has included journaling prompts and a meditation for you to complete as you learn this skill, demonstrating how learning to weave is more than a craft.

How long do I have access?

You will get immediate access upon purchase and then the pace is up to you. Learn over a weekend or a few weeks. You’ll have lifetime access to the video lessons, meditations and journal prompts.

Can I ask questions?

We have set out Gather and Weave to cover everything you need to start confidently weaving, in video and written materials. If you need to clarify something, you can leave a comment / ask a question within the course.

Are the materials provided?

No. You’ll need to purchase your own raffia and a needle. You’ll receive a detailed resource list with recommended ethical suppliers, including Indigenous sellers and Australian-based stockists. This way you can order your own materials, choose your colours, and we can keep the cost of the workshop more accessible.

I've always been a crafty person but I hadn't ever tried my hand at weaving, until Andy taught us at our women's circle. Weaving is such a therapeutic art and perfect to calm the nervous system and give a busy, anxious-brain and fiddly-hands something to do. It matches women's sharing circles so well. I'm thankful Andy took time to share her passion and skills with our group, each of us weaving, observing, listening and growing our way through the year together.
